Earlier this week I was playing a tournament online and had pushed my stack of $22,000 with AQs. The blinds were at $1,000/$2,000 with a $300 ante which was high enough that I couldn’t just raise with my stack, and I was hoping to double up if I got called. Sure enough I was insta called by the big blind who had $30,000. I considered that I was against a pocket pair, AJ, AK, or KQ. No, I was happily surprised when I was called by A3 off (more…)
If you’ve been playing poker long enough you’ve heard more than a few players utter the memorable words, “I hate getting pocket Aces”. To me, that’s like saying “I hate it when someone gives me $5,000 for no reason”. Now I could go blow all that $5,000 on candy bars and Circuit City stock, and that would be a pretty good waste of the money. Well the same thing applies to pocket Aces. They’re the absolute best starting hand, (more…)
I don’t normally advocate limping in with big pocket pairs, but there are a few circumstances where it might be profitable. One situation that limping in would be profitable is if you have a super tight image at the table. Whether you have a tight image because you are card dead, or are just playing tight, it will be hard to get any action if you raise your large pocket pair. If this is the case, you might want to just limp in and see if (more…)
The first tournament I played using small ball was successful in that it allowed me to play a lot of hands in the beginning stages and accumulate some chips without risking very much. However, I got killed using this tactic with my big pocket pairs. For my second tournament I wanted to use the small ball method to control the pot post flop and preflop I decided that I would use it as a means to see more flops. With my big pocket pairs I needed (more…)

Previously I wrote an article about the small ball concept and the theory behind it. I mentioned before that I was having trouble in tournaments with managing my chip stack, so I started playing around with different theories to help me improve. Overall, small ball seemed to work the best out of the concepts the I tried.
The first tournament I played implementing small ball, I decided that no matter what I was going to use the (more…)

Small ball poker is a method that has been made famous by poker pro Daniel Negreanu. I first became interested in the theory because I was having trouble with managing my chip stack in tournaments. In the beginning rounds I would bet my big hands substantially, and somehow people would still draw out on me. In the later rounds, I was having trouble compensating for the growing blinds, and I would tighten up the range of hands I would play (more…)

If you’ve played tournaments, you’ve probably run into the situation where you are short stacked and have to make a move soon. In these situations, you are looking for any two big cards or a pocket pair. I’ve been in this situation a million times, just praying that my next hand will bring me pocket aces. Instead, I will look down at pocket 3’s and have to make a decision. My first instinct is always to push in. My thinking is, (more…)

Floor managers, dealers and players present in the Grand’s poker room last Thursday all confirm that a severely intoxicated holdem player experienced great difficulty separating the similar yet distinct realities of online and physical poker.
