A new facet of poker is beginning to open up with the concept of team poker tournaments. Last November, The Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas hosted a team poker event. This event was private and only open to the industry, but it had such a following that Dream Team Poker decided to make it a public event. I received a email a few days ago asking if watching a lot of poker on TV can make you a better player. While I do agree that watching poker can add more to your game than watching baseball could add to your swing, I definitely feel that the type of poker represented on TV doesn’t quite showcase the proper playing method that most students of the game should adhere to.

16 Mar 09 Huck Seed Wins the 2009 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship
Former WSOP Main Event winner Huck Seed outlasted a field of over 60 of the worlds best heads-up poker players to become the 2009 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Champion, also becoming the overall most successful player in the history of the tournament. Seed took down female poker pro Vanessa Russo in a best of three matchup, winning two consecutive rounds, taking the title and $500,000 in cash, which was presented by 2008 Champion Chris Ferguson.

04 Mar 09 Jamie Gold Hosts Charity Poker Tournament For Children
Don’t let the title fool you, this wasn’t an underground back room poker game that involved Jamie Gold and half a dozen 10-year-olds in a no-limit ring game. Instead, the 2006 WSOP Main Event champion hosted a fundraiser tournament for the Children Uniting Nations charity, a non-profit organization that provides mentoring to at-risk and foster children.
“Some things are more important,” said Gold. “These kids need our help.”

The 2009 World Series of Poker is just around the corner, and the schedule has been released. There are bigger events, more bracelets, and bigger prize pools. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the World Series of Poker, there will be a $40,000 NL Hold’em event. Normally the rest of the poker world wouldn’t pay too much attention to the Scandinavian Poker Awards, but considering that 2008 WSOP Main Event champ Peter Eastgate was in the running in a number of categories, the ceremony is getting worldwide attention. Held at the Luux nightclub, the awards were divided into five different categories: Best Performance, Best Online Player, Best Live Player, Best Female Player and Rookie of the Year.

One of the best televised poker tournaments, the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship, is just around the corner, and the roster of attending poker stars has been announced. 64 players will participate in this year’s competition, among them are 12 former WSOP main-event champs, two Academy Award-nominated actors, and even an all-star baseball player.
