Playing Monster Sized Tournaments

Unless you’re able to fork over at least $1,000 or more to play in a WSOP event, your only chance to play in a tournament with a giant field is going to be online. These super events can be a lot of fun to play in, but the number of entries is so deep that it can take a very long time to find yourself in the money, and even then, the early paid positions usually just provide your money back plus an extremely small (more…)

23 Feb 09 Playing Limit Hold‘em vs. No-Limit Hold’em

Just about everyone begins their poker career at the low limit tables, where they’ll stay for awhile, learn the fundamentals of the game, and then consider moving up to either higher limits or no-limit. However, making the switch to a no-limit game may not be the best course of action for you, at least maybe not at the moment. Here are some of the fundamental differences between limit and no-limit hold’em so that you can best calculate (more…)

06 Feb 09 Playing Multiple Tables Online

Read enough poker magazines and you’ll hear about megastar online poker players that play 6 tables at once spread across 4 computer/TV screens. And as with all things since the poker boom like wearing sunglasses or listening to music at the table, the rest of the community wants to jump in and be like the pros. However, if you don’t know how to adjust your game correctly to play multiple tables at once, the only thing that’s going to (more…)

03 Feb 09 Playing In To Many Tournaments

Do you play more tournaments than you do cash games? If so, your career losses probably far outweigh your wins unless you’ve managed to win a tournament or two that had over 100 players signed up with a buy-in over $50. Thanks to the TV poker craze, the excitement over tournament poker is at a all time high, which results in deep fields of players, which in turn means the chances of making it in the money, regardless of how good you play, (more…)

4. I might be letting outside factors influence me- There are definitely times where it is hard to keep my personal life from affecting my sessions at the table. This is true for a lot of poker players. Maybe you just got in a fight with your significant other. Maybe work is stressing you out. Maybe you’ve been sick. Maybe there are important things you should be doing instead of playing poker…Whatever it is, subconsciously (or consciously) (more…)

30 Jan 09 When Running Bad Turns To Playing Bad- Part II

Now, I don’t usually advocate altering my style of play when it has done me justice consistently in the past few weeks. However, after four losing sessions in a row, perhaps it is time to assess my game before my four session losing streak turns into ten. All poker players go through the tribulations of losing sessions; it is just part of the game. For me, I will have to assume that there are a few things that I might need to be aware of (more…)

26 Jan 09 When Running Bad Turns To Playing Bad- Part I

Sometimes my love hate relationship with poker turns to pure hate. For the past two weeks I’ve been playing cash games and it seemed as if I couldn’t lose. I was bluffing at all the right times, I was betting my draws (and hitting them), and I was making sick calls against my opponents.

Maybe my ego got the best of me, or maybe luck just can’t last forever. I say this because after two weeks of non-stop winning, now I am (more…)

15 Dec 08 Playing the Blind for a Raise

There have been several times in my poker career where I am in the small blind and look down at 4 6 of hearts and say, “I hope I can see a flop.” Inevitably, someone will raise and I end up folding the hand, wishing I could have seen a flop.

Lets imagine, that we are playing 2/5 No Limit Texas Hold’em. In this scenario, we are the small blind with a hand like 4 6 of hearts, facing a raise of $25 dollars. There are 6 callers (more…)
