11 Mar 09 WSOP Chip Stack/Blind Structure Changes

Great news this week for players looking to try their luck at this years slew of WSOP events. The tournament director of the WSOP, Jack Effel, announced that the starting chip count for every tournament at the 2009 series will be tripled, giving players more bang for their entry buck. The news immediately drew concerns that the blind structure might have been negatively shortened to accommodate for the heavier stacks, but as it turns out, additional levels have been added to numerous events.

“It’s a tough economy, so we wanted to make sure our poker players were getting the most value,” said Effel. “But this is about making the tournaments better for the longevity.”

The duration of the levels themselves will remain at 60min for most of the events, and while some of the tournaments like the Main Event will stick to the 2008 blind structure, others like the $50,000 HORSE and popular $1,500 No-Limit events will receive an increase in the number of levels. Despite the fact that the Main Event is keeping its structure, the additional bump up in starting chips (from $10,000 to now $30,000) will allow players the opportunity to ease themselves into a groove and dramatically decrease the starting pressure of the tournament.
